Title |
Early Medieval (Anglo Saxon) buckle |
||
Description |
English: An Early Medieval (Anglo Saxon) copper alloy buckle that is part of a set with a strap end (9th century). The buckle frame is oval with a pair of perforated lugs projecting from the rear edge. The perforations are orientated at 90 degrees to the buckle frame. The frame between the lugs narrows slightly to secure the pin, which is no longer present. On the opposite side of the frame to the lugs is an oval projection that has been moulded to form a zoomorphic mask with laid-back ears that sits in high relief to the buckle frame. The animal has ring and dot motifs to represent eyes. Further ring and dot motifs decorate the upper surface of the frame. The reverse is undecorated. The copper alloy has a mid-green patina. Dimensions: length 27.77mm; width: 23.37mm; thickness: 2.44mm; weight: 4.63g.
