Title
Early Medieval: Stirrup Strap Mount
Description
English: A complete copper alloy Stirrup Strap Mount, of Late Saxon dating (11th Century AD).

The stirrup strap mount is sub triangular in shape and irregular in cross section. The front exhibits one (1) attachment holes: positioned centrally at the apex of the mount. The decoration is indistinct, but probably depicts an interlaced beast, with the head at the apex of the mount. Two feet are present on either side at the base of the mount.

The back is concave and undecorated. A flange is present at the base, of the Common Right Angle Flange type (A) as catalogued by Williams (1997, p.25, fig 18). Remnants of the iron stirrup are present on the flange.

The strap mount measures 55.3 mm in height, 31.3 mm wide and 16.1 mm thick. The internal diameter of the top hole measures 3.5 mm. It weighs 39.5 grams.

The artefact was tested using a Mistral XRF machine to determine the alloy composition. The results are:

<tbody></tbody>
Location Cu (%) Zn (%) Ti (%) Fe (%) Sn (%) Pb (%)
Front 53.67 2.92 1.11 8.87 2.05 -
Back 55.77 1.38 0.68 13.46 3.83 -

A comparative example from Dorset was published by Williams (1997, p. 54, #180) and has been classified as Class A (Sub triangular), Type 10 and is thought to be of 11th Century AD dating.
