Title
Early Medieval: Incomplete saucer brooch
Description
English: An incomplete probable saucer brooch of Early Early Medieval dating (6th to 7th Century AD).

Around 25% of the brooch is present, and probably had an original rim diameter of 8 cm. The brooch has suffered from a degree of post depositional damage and is slightly bent. The edge of the brooch still extends upwards at an obtuse angle, but the main saucer part of the brooch is no longer flat but slightly bowed. The reverse of the brooch is plain and undecorated. The catch plate and pin attachment lug are not present. The decoration on the front of the brooch consists of a double pellet / rope like border. Inside, the deocration has been split into zones, two of which are present. interlaced zoomorphic style animals appear to be present.

The brooch measures 33.8 mm in length, 46.1 mm wide and 2.2 mm thick. It weighs 16.8 g.

The brooch is a mid dark green colour, with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.
