Title
Early Medieval: Incomplete orthorhombic pin head
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy head from a hair pin, of Early Medieval dating (AD 700 to AD 900).

The hair pin consists of the head and a small section of the shank. The head is similar to that of Cool's Group 15 type (Cool, 1990, 164), consisting of a cube shaped head, covered by diamond and triangular shaped facets (Orthorhombic shape). Each of the sides has been decorated with a ring and dot stamp. Four ring and dots are present on both the front and back faces. One ring and dot is present on each of the side facets. The top is plain. The shank is circular in cross section and extends 5.2 mm below the head. A small circular collar is present just beneath the head, at the start of the shank.

The hair pin is a mid to dark green colour with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil has resulted in a loss of surface detail and removal of the patina.

It measures 15.0 mm in length, 8.9 mm wide and 5.1 mm thick. It weighs 2.1 grams.

This style is middle Saxon in dating, but is similar to a Late Roman style. It can be distinguished by the presence of ring & dot designs and the presence/absence of a collar beneath the head. A couple of similar pin heads have been recorded on the PAS database including WMID-1BCE05; LVPL-0C8D97; FAKL-829235; FAKL-820213; and SUR-84CA90.
