Early Medieval: Incomplete great square headed brooch |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete gilded copper alloy great square headed brooch, of Early Medieval dating (c. AD 520 to c. AD 590).
Less than 25% of the brooch is present, consisting of part of the footplate. The footplate bar and the upper borders are present on the front of the brooch. The remnants of the catch plate is present on the reverse. The footplate bar has been decorated with two stamped annulet eyes, with five horizontal grooves beneath it. To either side of the footplate bar, are the upper borders. These comprise a bird on the right and a probable bird on the left. Gilding is still present on the raised areas of decoration. It measures 28.9 mm in length, 39.3 mm wide and 9.1 mm thick. It weighs 15.5 g. The brooch is a mid to dark green colour, with an even surface patina. Gilding is still present on the front of the brooch. Several similar great square headed brooches have been recorded on the PAS database, including NMS-AD2D92; NMS-CD5994 and NARC-F91726. All are considered to be 6th Century AD in dating. |
