Title
Early Early Medieval Relief Brooch illustrated by J. Gibbons
Description
English: An incomplete Early Saxon gilt Relief brooch, comprising a semi-circular head plate with three sub-triangular projections with pairs of outward-turning scrolls. The decoration on the plate consists of two concentric lunate ridges bordering a series of irregular vertical U-shaped or comma-like ribs, all of which curves around and above a pair of ridges defining the rounded upper end of the bow where it projects onto the plate. The ridges on the bow flank a substantial central rib. The bow has a worn granular transverse break and the lower part and foot are missing. There are two broken pin lugs on the reverse. The piece measures 35 x 34mm. A close parallel to this brooch was found in Mundford (Norfolk Historic Environment Record number 35073). It was discussed at length by Helen Geake and Barry Ager of the British Museum (see correspondence in the NHER 35073 secondary file housed at Union House offices, Gressenhall, Norfolk) and identified as a South Scandinavian type, more usually found in silver gilt, of the fifth to early sixth century.
