Title
Early Early-Medieval bell-shaped pendant
Description
English: An Early Early-Medieval (c.500-600) copper alloy gilt bell-shaped pendant with Salin's Style I decoration, measuring 55.65x42.94x3.92mm and weighing 22.42g. The reverse is slightly concave.

The mount is roughly triangular in shape with a plain band along the bottom edge c.7mm wide. The apex opposite is pierced and has traces of an iron rivet within it. Apparently attached to this is a piece of sheet copper alloy c.7x7mm, although this may also be a raised and thickened area - it is not clear through wear and corrosion, although bell-shaped pendant are known to have a weakness at this point. Below and to either side are two more rivet holes c.2mm in diameter to the front and countersunk from the reverse (where they are c.3.5mm diameter). The edge below the apex is rounded with a thickened rim (lost through wear in one place). Both long edges of the triangle below are irregularly-crenellated.

Below the two empty rivet holes (and slightly intersected by them) is a probable brow ridge formed of two joined inverted U-shapes. At the centre a thin raised rib extends vertically into a prominent triangular 'nose' below, and to either side are bulbous round 'eyes'. Below is an open rectangle stacked on top of three horizontal ribs, on top of another open rectangle. This sits above the plain band flanking the bottom edge. Below the eyes is a section of curving horizontal thin ribs. These are crossed by a section of diagonal thin ribs. To either side of the area below the nose is an L and inverted-L of thin ribs, from the centre of which another section of thin ribs curves outwards and downwards in an arc.

The reverse of the pendant is plain and undecorated.

Similar pendants (characterised by their bell-like shape) are known from 'Suffolk' (MacGregor and Bolick 1993, no.25.6, p.162); Barrington, Cambs (op. cit., no.25.6, p.163); Brighthampton, Oxon (op. cit. no.25.8, p.163); Chessel Down (grave 85), Isle of Wight (Arnold 1982, 68 and fig. 18); and Kingsworthy (grave 77), Hants (Chadwick Hawkes and Grainger 2004, 76 and 108). Examples recorded by the Portable Antiquities Scheme are HAMP3442 (from Hampshire), SUR-6FBE75 (from East Sussex), SOMDOR-A8DD87 (from Dorset) and KENT-CC59C7 (from Kent).

Chadwick Hawkes and Grainger suggest that they are belt pendants or purse fittings, but they are also thought to have a role on horse harness.
