Title |
Early Early-Medieval Buckle |
||
Description |
English: Incomplete Early-Medieval copper alloy double-tongue buckle and frame of Marzinzik's Type II.24a, of the 7th century, measuring 39.27x43.25x5.37mm and weighing 14.3g. It is missing a corner of the plate.
The frame is oval in shape and made of copper alloy wire 2.3mm in diameter (with the join presumably hidden by the plate). Its width is 43.25mm (internal 38.83mm) and its length is 9.68mm (internal 5.23mm). The two tongues/ pins are zoomorphic in form, curving over the outside edge of the frame. Each is decorated with a square-edged ridge where it extends above the plate, and a pair of transverse grooves just before it curls over the outside edge of the frame. Beyond these grooves is a bulbous brow ridge which narrows and then extends and widens to a snout. The other end curls around the back edge of the frame. The plate is sheet metal 0.61mm thick curved around the frame with two rectangular slots for the tongues/ pins. The reverse of the plate is plain but the other face has a crenellated outside edge formed of a triangular point either side of a curve. The plate is decorated with three pairs of transverse grooves, each of which terminates in a triangular point. This creates four sections on the plate, one of which is half missing. Each section has a rivet hole c.1.5mm in diameter, one of which is lost due to the damage. One rivet remains in situ. There are four aligned rivet holes on the reverse.
