Early Bronze Age flat axe |
||
Description |
English: Early Bronze Age flat axe. Small axehead. In plan, from the rounded butt end the width remains the same until about the centre of the axe when it begins to gently expand to the blade end; the blade edge and tips are damaged. In section, the axe gradually thickens slightly towards the centre but there is no ridge / stop or flanges. On one side the edge bevel begins c.8mm from the surviving damaged blade edge; there are longitudianl striations behind the edge bevel, and oblique striations in one direction on the bevel (about 45° to the bevel going upwards to the right). On the other side the edge bevel begins c.7.5mm from the damaged blade edge and there are faint transverse (very slightly oblique) striations behind the bevel, and oblique 45° striations on the bevel (same as the other side). Fine mid blue-green patina with some light blue-green pitting. Length 75.7mm, width at blade end (tips damaged) 30.7mm, width at butt end 15.5mm, max thickness (towards centre) 5.3mm, thickness at butt end 2.3mm, thickness at blade end (damaged) 2.5mm, weight 45.96g. |
