Title
Early Anglo-Saxon girdle hanger
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy girdle hanger of Anglo-Saxon/Early Medieval date. Only one incomplete arm of the E-shaped terminal survives intact, the remainder of the object now missing due to old breaks. The surviving fragment is flat, rectangular in section and with a backwards L-shaped form, terminating at both ends in old breaks. At the corner of the object is a large punched ring and dot motif, with traces of an added white metal coating or solder extending above the motif onto the front face of the arm. The entire object has a green patina and measures 19.76mm in length, 10.38mm in width, 1.67mm in thickness, and weighs 1.61g.

This is an Early Anglo-Saxon girdle hanger fragment, an object typically found in burial contexts associated with women. It finds parallels in other examples from Suffolk (see for example West, 1998: nos. 45.4, 110.15-16) and probably dates to the Early Anglo-Saxon period, c.450-700 AD.
