Title |
Early-medieval sword: Sword pommel cap |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) sword pommel cap of 'cocked hat' type, dating to c. AD 400-600. The cap is rectangular in plan and pyramidal in form with sloping corners. It is concave on the underside. At each side the longer sections are now broken and lost but would have extended and housed rivet holes to secure the cap to the top of the pommel. No decoration can be seen on the pommel cap. Copper-alloy pommel caps are fairly regular embellishments on Anglo-Saxon swords (MacGregor and Bolick 1993:237). Pommel caps were to secure the pommel and to form a decorative terminal. It is probably fifth or sixth century in date. |
