Title
Early-medieval strap end
Description
English: A complete early medieval gilded copper alloy mount, dating to c. AD 470-570.

The mount is a sub rectangular plate with a raised margin and an arched feature at one end. All the surfaces are decorated with chip carved Sain Style I decoration. On the underside are four integral studs or lugs, one in each corner of the rectangular section of the plate, and there are two circular piercings just above the rectangular section, within the arched end. Between the two piercings is further decoration, potentially a further zoomorphic depiction.

The rectangular field is gilded and contains Salin Style I decoration. This consists of two profile, addorsed animals their heads, indicated by pellet eyes, lying in the top left and bottom right corners of the panel. Two limbs are shown on each animal; the front leg in the form of a reversed number 2 and the hind leg made up of three-strand bars which turn through two right angles. Behind the hind legs are a frond like elements which, on other objects, is used to represent feet but on this example does not fit in with the animal. Above the panel is an openwork projection bearing two opposed eagles' heads, their hooked beaks clearly shown.

It is 23.61mm in length and 21.75mm in width. It weighs 6.89g. It is 3.05mm thick (not including the lugs).
