Title
Early-medieval girdle-hanger
Description
English: Incomplete copper-alloy girdle-hanger of early Anglo-Saxon date. The terminals are missing, and the shank has a flat rectangular cross-section shank. The shank is broken across what appears to be a rounded perforation; this is probably a rivet hole from an ancient repair. The shank neck is D-shaped in cross-section and has two broad grooves across it, below a broken (worn-through) suspension loop. Although stamped decoration is common on girdle-hangers, there are no stamps visible on the photograph. Girdle-hangers were in use in Anglian areas from c. 450 to c. 560 AD.

Length: 43.5mm, Width: 6.8mm, Thickness: 5.1mm, Weight: 5.70g.
