Title
Early-medieval ear-scoop
Description
English: A copper-alloy ear-scoop of early Early-medieval (Anglo-Saxon) date. No exact parallel could be found for this artefact although a similar scoop was found in a grave at Buckland, Dover (Evison 1987: 225/fig. 19), dated at c. 575-675. The style of the slip-knot ring (see below) is a typical feature of early Anglo-Saxon toilet articles.

The arm of the scoop is of rectangular section and of equal width and thickness for most of its length. The apex loop comprises a perforated sub-circular lobe with a transverse ridge at its base. Attached to this loop is a circular slip-knot ring, the ends having been overlapped and their terminals wound around the ring in order to secure the knot. At the centre of the ear-scoop the sides widen into two sub-oval elements with a separating transverse ridge. At the bottom the sides gradually widen into a rounded scoop with flat surfaces. The surfaces of the artefact appear to be covered with a black substance.

The object is slightly bent but is otherwise in good condition. It measures 88.8mm long, 5mm wide (at the scoop and the central element), 1.8mm thick and weighs 4.55g. The slip-knot ring measures 13.6mm in diameter.
