Title |
Early-medieval coin brooch: Aethelstan coin brooch |
||
Description |
English: An almost complete gilded silver coin brooch or badge dating to the Late Early-Medieval period. The brooch is formed from a penny of Aethelstan (AD 924/25 - 939), struck in the North East by Willuf. The obverse is gilded and reads: AETHELSTAN REX. The reverse is ungilded and retains part of a copper alloy mount or clasp, which has been fastened in place with a small silver rivet. A second silver rivet is retained close to the first. On the opposite edge of the coin are two small holes which would presumable also have held silver rivets, but these are now missing. The reverse of the object as a coin can be described as the 'horizontal trefoil (HT1)' type, however copper mount obscures the top trefoil - one pellet can be seen but this combination of reverse forms is extremely rare and it is therefore more likely to be a trefoil. North Type 668b. The moneyer's name is presented over two lines as follows: VVIL / + + + / LVF M. Although it is uncertain when this object's use changed from a coin to brooch / bagde, it was probably during the 10th century AD; the coin shows little wear which suggests it was not in circulation long before its use was altered. |
