Title |
Early-medieval buckle (probably) |
||
Description |
English: A complete single-looped cast copper-alloy buckle probably of early-medieval date. The frame is of simple, oval form with a circular cross-section. The inner edge around which the pin is looped is flattened. The thick wire pin survives well with minimal pitting. The frame is retained within a simple, short plate formed of a folded rectangular sheet. This features a slot for the pin and a pair of rivet holes at the attachment end. The plate has broken at the strips either side of the pin. The lower half of the fold is abraded at one of these strips and one of the rivet holes. Two small rivets survive with the piece. The artefact is seemingly plain but is corroded with a variable mid-brown/green colour. A buckle of similar form and dimensions, though with three rather than two rivets, can be found illustrated in MacGregor and Bolick (1993, 205; ref. 34.61). |
