Title
Early-medieval brooch: Saucer brooch
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy Anglo-Saxon saucer brooch dating from c. AD 450-550. The outer, upwards and outurned rim of the brooch is incomplete, although over two-thirds survive. The centre of the brooch is decorated with a moulded pattern of five running spirals around a central ring and dot design, all enclosed within a narrow circumferential border. Small flecks of gilding on the face and patches on the rim is all that remains of a coating that would once have covered the entire face of the brooch. The reverse has the remains of the integrally cast pin hinge and catch plate. Iron staining suggests an iron pin, which was commonplace on these brooches.
