Title
Early-medieval brooch: Disc brooch
Description
English: A fragment of a cast copper alloy disc brooch of probable early-medieval (Anglo-Saxon) date. The fragment consists of part of the outer edge and some of the central part of the brooch. The upper side is decorated around the outer edge with repeating punched dots, slightly recessed and retaining traces of white metal (silvering) within. The dots are bound by a thin circumferential linear border, with a second visible towards the centre of the brooch. The reverse is flat and plain.

This style of disc brooch is common to the Upper Thames Valley area and similar examples are in collections in the Ashmolean Museum (Bolick & MacGregor 1993). They generally date to around AD 450-550.
