Title
Early-medieval brooch: Disc brooch
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) disc brooch dating to the 5th or 6th century AD. The brooch is approximately 3/4 complete, with the damage probably occuring post-deposition. The brooch has a central ring motif and multiple ring and dot motifs located around the circumference near the external edge. Around the periphery are multiple raised dots, punched through from the reverse side of the brooch. Both faces of the brooch retain some silvering. The reverse of the brooch retains the catchplate however the spring and pin is missing. This style of disc brooch is common to the Upper Thames Valley area and similar examples are in collections in the Ashmolean Museum (Bolick & MacGregor 1993). They generally date to around AD 450-550.
