Title
Early-medieval brooch: Button brooch
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy button brooch of early-medieval (Anglo-Saxon) date (c. AD 450-550). The brooch is missing only its pin and a small part of the catchplate on the reverse, otherwise it is complete. The brooch depicts a facemask within a concentric circle. The brow is made from two thick horizontal lines above the eyebrows and nose, which is formed from two inverted L-shaped mouldings, on reversed. The mouth is formed from a semi-circular moulding. The eyes are oval and cheekbones, or possibly helmet cheekpieces, are formed of curved rectangular mouldings. The upturned rim of the brooch is slightly damaged but nonetheless complete. Traces of gilding survives on the facemask.
