Title
Early-medieval brooch: Anglo-Saxon disc brooch
Description
English: A nearly complete cast copper alloy Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) disc brooch dating to the 5th or 6th century AD. The brooch has a central double ring motif with central recess and four further ring and dot motifs located equidistantly around the circumference of the brooch near the external edge. The face of the brooch retains some silvering. The reverse of the brooch retains most of the catchplate and the hinge lug however the pin is missing. This style of disc brooch is common to the Upper Thames Valley area and similar examples are in collections in the Ashmolean Museum (Bolick & MacGregor 1993). They generally date to around AD 450-550. See also BERK-3A9FD8 for a similar example from the same area.
