Title
Early-medieval bridle fitting: Cheek piece
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy cheek piece bridle fitting of Anglo-Scandinavian date (11th century AD). The cheek piece fragment represents just under half of the original object, which would have had symmetrical decoration on the opposing half. The cheek piece depicts a beast in the Ringerike style, with the most narrow part of the object bearing the open mouth of the beast, eye and possible ear which sticks up above the main body of the object. The animal is crouched on all fours, with a second projecting knop possibly meant to depict the raised shoulders of the animal. The body is comprised of interlaced patterns. The reverse is flat, plain and undecorated. Towards the rear of the animal is the remains of an openwork circle, which would have formed the aperture for the bridle bit. This object is similar to another recorded on this database (GLO-939CE3) and can be classed as Williams' (2007:2-3) Type 1d.
