Title |
Early-medieval bracteate: Possible bracteate |
||
Description |
English: A small circular disc made from gold foil, possibly of early Anglo-Saxon date. The disc has been stamped on one side with an unclear impression in the centre, including linear motifs but difficult to identify with certainty due to the crumpled condition of the artefact. The design is enclosed by a border of pellets. Only just visible to the naked eye, but clear with the use of a glass, are multiple incised lines running circumferentially around the outer edge of the foil. There is no obvious hook or tab on any part of the edge for suspension or attachment.
This disc superficially resembles early medieval gold bracteates of the fifth to sixth centuries, but is missing crucial features that would identify it as such. It is much thinner, lighter and smaller than even the smallest and lightest Anglo-Saxon bracteates, and it lacks any sign of an attachment loop (as noted above). The linear motifs visible in the central design appear to have been made with a patrix, whereas early Anglo-Saxon bracteates were typically stamped with a matrix. The visible elements of the central design are also not matched by known early or later (sixth to seventh century) bracteates. On balance, it appears instead to be some form of very thin token. Date: Probably fifth to seventh centuries This object is more than 300 years old and is composed of more than 10% precious metal. It should therefore be considered Treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act 1996. With thanks to Charlotte Behr of Roehampton University for her expertise in preparing this report. |
