Title
Early-medieval Great square-headed brooch fragment
Description
English: A fragment of a copper-alloy Great square-headed brooch of probable late 5th to 6th century (Anglo-Saxon) date. The piece represents a side or terminal lobe from the footplate of the brooch. Such lobes of anthropomorphic form are a common feature of Hines' Group II brooches (see J. Hines; 1997; fig. 17).

The piece is sub-oval in form, having slightly convex vertical edges. The upper surface bears a well-executed design in high relief, which takes the form a stylised human face. The upper head is tri-lobate. The uppermost lobe contains a circular depression; the lower two lobes contain the large, pointed-oval eyes and the trapezoidal nose, which extends upwards into the brow ridge. Directly below the nose is a moustache and, below this, a vertical column-like neck with a central ropework element. The aforementioned column extends beyond a transverse ridge to the broken bottom edge. Surrounding the face is a flat field and around the perimeter is a ridge. The surface is heavily gilt.

It measures 28.6mm long, 13.9mm wide and 4.4mm thick. No weight was recorded.
