Title
Early-medieval : Equal-armed brooch
Description
English: A cast copper-alloy small ansate brooch, from the Frankish Merovingian period, possibly made in England. The brooch has a rounded head, with an incised triangle. Below the head there is a collar. The head-plate has a moulded lug on the reverse on its centre-line immediately above the junction with the bow. The bow is arched and rounded. Below the bow is a wide collar, which has an incised line. Below this a lobe flares out and behind this the lower part of the bow can be seen, but it has broken off. The pin is missing. The metal is dark greyish-brown in colour and the brooch survives in a fair condition. Similar to examples in Hattatt p.380, Fig: 239.

Ansate brooches were used in France from the 7th century AD but do not appear to have been used in England until the 8th. They seem to go out of use in the tenth century.
