Title
Early-medieval : Bead
Description
English: A bead, probably made of glass and possibly dating to the early medieval period - therefore Anglo Saxon. The bead is sub-oval in shape and has a hole through the centre. It measures 23.89mm x 21.42mm x 16.74mm. It weighs 12.69g.

The bead would have been made by melting glass into a crucible. Then an iron rod would have been used to gather the glass. The glass was then trickled onto the rod, forming the central hole and then it would have been rolled, to smooth the outer surface. The manufacture of glass beads is exampled fully in Leahy (2003) see reference below.

The glass used is translucent. The surface of the bead is badly worn and is very pitted. It is a light silvery-grey colour.
