Title
Early-medieval (Anglo-Saxon) to Medieval strap-end
Description
English: A cast lead strap-end of late Early-medieval (Anglo-Saxon) to Medieval date. This is an example of a Thomas type E strap end. The suggested date range is c. 900 - 1100AD (see Geake, 2001, illust. 11). The bent and heavily corroded strap-end is tongue-shaped and probably has the remnants of a cast design in the upper surface. The attachment end contains a vertical split (now closed) into which the belt would originally have slotted. Close to each of the two top corners is a small circular rivet/sewing hole. The strap-end measures 31.8mm long, 20.6mm wide and 3.4mm thick. The weight is 12.21g.
