Title |
Early-medieval/medieval single-looped buckle frame |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete and highly corroded cast copper-alloy oval single-looped buckle frame, with possible zoomorphic features, of early-medieval to medieval date. The frame is sub-oval in section, and thicker at the outer edge. This tapers into a probable zoomorphic head, with a flattened oval ear, probable eye and an elongated snout from which the narrow strap bar extends. The lower end of this zoomorphic buckle tapers out in opposition to the snout and nose to give the appearance of curvature in the strap bar. Additionally, along the spine of the buckle is a raised linear feature. The buckle is highly corroded to a light-green colour, though a brown-red tinge commonly associated with later early-medieval finds can be seen in small patches, most notably on the strap bar, and snout protrusions. This object is similar to a buckle illustrated in Griffiths et al. (2007, 72; ref. 313); see also NLM-03EEC4 and PUBLIC-69A6D3 on this database. |
