Title
Early-Medieval mount
Description
English: Fragment of Early Early-Medieval copper alloy hanging bowl mount of Kendrick's 'Developed Trumpet' type with remains of white enamel decoration, weighing 3.53g and measuring 32.32x17.60x1.88mm. It would have had a diameter of c.40-45mm. It is decorated with three joining spirals in a triskele-type roundel with curving foliate decoration between, and is likely to have formed part of a larger triskele, perhaps with an additional spiral/ roundel at the centre. The 'legs' of the spirals are long and trumpet-like, hence Kendrick's 'Developed Trumpet' type. The mount is concave to the reverse and would have been contained within a separate frame and integral hook. This would have been mounted to the side of a hemispherical-shaped bowl, so the hook and rim form an enclosed space inside which a ring would be placed. Often the centre of the mount is thicker and thins towards the edges, although this example has uniform thickness (and presuambly is close to the edge anyway). Three (and sometimes four) of these mounts would have been placed around the rim for suspension from the rings. Occasionally they were also placed at the bottom of the bowl (without hook) for decoration. Flat mounts would have decorated the underside of the bowl. Hanging bowls were placed in graves of the 6th and 7th century although they may have been used earlier than this. Kendrick dates this type to the late 6th century, while Kilbride-Jones Group B is 4th-7th. Fowler dates the type early-late 7th and Henry (his Group B) mid-late 7th century [Brenan, J. 1991,'Hanging Bowls and their Contexts', B.A.R. 220]. For a similarly-designed example, see DENO-2C8187. Also Brenan 1991 p.234, Cat. No.35 (from Hitchin, Herts), p.239, Cat. No.38 (from Lovedon Hill, Leics), p.251, Cat. No.42 (Marina Drive, Bedfordshire) and p.287 Cat. No. 66 (Unprovenanced, Victoria & Albert Museum).
