Title
Early-Medieval buckle pin. Drawing: Frank Basford
Description
English: Cast copper alloy buckle pin which in the past has been known as a shield on tongue type. Length 11mm, width 22.2mm and 11mm thick. The shaft is sub-triangular in section and curves sharply downwards to an angle of about 90 degrees. On the underside of the shaft, a pronounced and centrally situated casting seam, extends longitudinally throughout the length of the pin. The top of the curved end of the shield and the top of the straight edge of the shield (adjacent to the shaft) are finely denticulated. This decoration has probably been created by punching. There is a considerable amount of wear on the underside of the pin where it has been in contact with the outer edge of the frame and has flattened and smoothed the casting seam in this area. There is a deposit of iron corrosion on the underside in the area where the loop adjoined the pin plate. The loop is missing. All surfaces are tinned. However, the pin is possibly made of bronze with a high tin content. Similar buckles were found at Chessell Down, Isle of Wight, Anglo Saxon cemetery during the nineteenth century. See Arnold 1982.
