Title
Early-Medieval bell (incomplete)
Description
English: An Early-Medieval copper-alloy bell. The bell chamber is of hexagonal section with straight sides tapering steeply towards the top, where it is surmounted by a damaged rounded loop. The six sides that surround the open bottom end are concave, giving the bell a fluted appearance, and have incurved bases. creating a knop or foot on each of the six corners. The bell's clapper is missing but two small holes, set within an unidentified substance beneath the point on the inside, mark its original position. The outer surfaces of the bell are corroded in places and possibly bear traces of a black coating. The object measures 29.9mm high, 24.6mm wide at the base and weighs 11.7g.

This bell was found in association with a similar, smaller bell, BH-948BC7. Another parallel was found at Meols, Cheshire (Griffiths et al 2007: 69/pl. 75, no. 390). They are increasingly thought to be characteristic of the Danelaw in the 10th century (ibid. 69-70 for further discussion; also see Schoenfelder and Richards 2011, who discuss Norse bells in detail).
