Title |
Early-Medieval Sword Pommel (Possibly) |
||
Description |
English: A possible small cast copper alloy sword pommel of early-medieval date. The curvilinear mount measures 38.8mm by 11.8mm by 9.7mm and weighs 15.9g. It has four rounded lobes on the front and rounded flattened ends with central holes. The back has a central hollow.
The following paragraph is based on comments from Helen Geake: This object is an oddity. From the length and relatively low profile it looks like an early Anglo-Saxon sword pommel. The lobes are much more characteristic of the Viking style, but this example is so small and low that this is problematic, and parallels are hard to find. The main problem with it being later Anglo-Saxon is the rounded plates at the end which are pierced for rivets holding the pommel to the upper guard. When they have rivets holding them onto the upper guard, Viking and later Anglo-Saxon pommels have them well-concealed within the end lobes. So this example appears to be a kind of hybrid between the late Anglo-Saxon lobed type and the early Anglo-Saxon 'cocked hat' type. There are very few surviving pommels of middle Anglo-Saxon date that are not of higher quality. On balance an early to middle Anglo-Saxon (7th or 8th century) date seems most likely. |
