Title
Early-Medieval : Hanging Bowl Disc
Description
English: An incomplete copper-alloy millefiori glass and champlevé enamel basal disc from an Anglo-Saxon hanging bowl of Early-Medieval date, c. AD 500 - 700. The mount is circular with a slightly domed profile and a raised circumferential border to the upper surface.

The upper surface is decorated with Iron Age (or 'Celtic) designs featuring elaborate curvilinear tendrils and triskele-style swirls enclosing an area of fine-line trumpet spiral designs. This is set around a central rectangular panel filled with millefiori-style enamel work in the form of an irregular chequer board of blue and yellow enamel.

Within the tendrils are circular recesses, many of which retain red enamel traces. Two of the circular recesses act as perforations for rivets which still remain. Much of the recessed area within the trumpet spirals and tendrils also retain degraded red enamel.

The reverse is undecorated and corroded. The two parallel rivets can be seen projecting through the surface.

The metal has a mid-green patina and is worn. The mount is 51.8mm in diameter, 2.3mm thick and weighs 23.4g
