Title
Early-Medieval : Ansate Brooch
Description
English: An incomplete copper-alloy ansate brooch of early-medieval date, c.AD 700-750. The head of the brooch comprises an unevenly armed cross, one arm of which extends to form the start of an arched bow. Only a short length of the rectangular bow survives, the rest having been lost to old worn breaks. The arm opposite the bow is narrower and has a rounded terminal. The remaining arms are also rounded, narrow and short. The three surviving arms are decorated with ring-and-dot designs at the terminals joined by linear grooves.

To the reverse of the brooch, an integral hook or loop remains through which the pin would have fitted. This is set transversely, perpendicular to the direction of the pin. The presence of iron corrosion suggests the pin was constructed of iron.

The metal has a light green, abraded patina and is worn. The brooch is 25.8mm long, 20.7mm wide, 3.7mm thick (10.3mm with loop) and weighs 4.3g.

Brooches of this type are dated by Weetch to the late 7th or early 8th century following Continental dating (Weetch 2013, 156), but do not occur in graves in England so probably post-date the 7th century here. Similar examples are illustrated in Hattatt, p.380, fig.239; also compare LEIC-4F3D07 and NCL-68A842.
