Description
English: An almost complete cast copper alloy sword pommel of Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) date (c. 410- c. 720).

The pommel is a 'cocked hat' type. It is broadly rectangular in plan, with slightly bowed longer edges. The two shorter edges are abraded and each retains the remains of a flat semi-circular lug that enabled the pommel to be secured to the pommel bar by means of rivets. The artefact is pyramidal in outline with concave sides and a small rounded top. The lower surface of the pommel is deeply concave.

The upper surface has a patchy mid-green patina interspersed with superficial corrosion. Traces of a white metal coating, possibly a tin alloy are visible on the upper surface.

14.1 x 31.7 x 13.6mm. Weight: 15.10g.

The 'cocked hat' pommel is an early Anglo-Saxon type, examples of which can be found illustrated in MacGregor & Bolick (1993, 237-38).
