Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) S-shaped Brooch. Drawing: Frank Basford |

Description |
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy S-shaped brooch of Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) date, probably fifth or sixth century (AD 400 – AD 600). Length: 23.2mm; width: 8.2mm and 7.1mm thick. Weight: 1.85g. The brooch is solid and largely flat at the front with no perforations or openwork. It is decorated with two grooves each close to an edge, resulting in a central broad flat-topped ridge flanked by a narrower ridge to either side. At each end is an animal head seen in profile, with a circular groove forming an eye and an open beak or mouth. The lower jaw is curled backwards, and the upper jaw is long and gently curving upwards to meet the edge of the central straight part of the S. Except for the pin lug and catch-plate, the rear face of the brooch is slightly convex. The perforated lug is D-shaped as viewed from the side and contains part of a copper alloy axis bar. The small catch-plate is complete. Gilding has survived within the grooves at the front. The piece is corroded overall but appears to be in a stable condition. No indication of melting or burning. A similar brooch was discovered during the excavation of a grave at Chessell Down, Isle of Wight on 28 August 1855. See, Arnold. C. J. 1982. “The Anglo-Saxon Cemeteries of the Isle of Wight”. 31, fig. 16, ref. 69ii. London: Trustees of the British Museum. A similar brooch has also been recorded from Yarmouth Parish, Isle of Wight. See Portable Antiquities Scheme find: IOW-22A124. For a comparable unprovenanced S-shaped brooch, see: Portable Antiquities Scheme find: FAHG-52BAA5. |
