Title
Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) Buckle Pin
Description
English: An incomplete Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) cast copper-alloy buckle pin (c. 575-c. 625).

The pin loop is missing.

This pin is a 'shield-on-tongue' type. The integral plate over the pin is shaped like a violin. It is flat on the upper face and on the underside. In plan, it has a rounded end then a waist formed by two rounded cut-outs (opposite each other). The missing loop was made of copper-alloy and only the stub remains. The shaft of the pin, 'D'-shaped in cross-section, tapers in width and the tip curves down at an angle of about 60°.

The surfaces generally green and corroded with patches of iron staining. No evidence of tinning, burning or melting.

Length: 34.76mm; width: 11.64mm; thickness: 7.49mm. Weight: 8.67g.
