Title
Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) Buckle (Quoit Brooch Style)
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy buckle of Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) date (c. 425-c. 475), decorated in Quoit Brooch style.

The buckle has an oval loop and a plate, divided by a feature that appears to imitate a hinge between the loop and the plate. All are integral. The width of the loop is 36.3mm. Close to the inner edge of the loop are two incurving lugs. These are divided by an elongated 'U'-shaped pin slot. The pin and pin bar are missing. At its juncture with the loop, the plate has a width of 27.1mm. It expands in width towards the attachment end where the width is 29.2mm. In plan, the attachment end has rounded corners. At all four corners of the plate there are circular rivet holes, each having a diameter of 1.6mm. The attachment end has a small 'V'-shaped notch at the centre and on either side there are two sets of three holes forming a triangular shape.

Decoration on the front of the loop consists of scrolls and a line of punch marks near the inner edge. However, due to wear, this decoration is almost lost. Two similar parallel lines of punch marks are situated widthways between the loop and the plate (the part that appears to imitate a hinge). Close to each of the longer edges at the front of the plate there is a narrow incised border containing lines of punch marks. The marks appear to have been made with the same punch as the lines near the inner edge of the loop although these lines on the plate appear to be 'double-banked'. At the centre of the plate, there is a decorative panel, situated lengthways. This decoration consists of three conjoined incised 'marigold' and scroll motifs, typical of the non-zoomorphic, 'geometric' style.

The underside of the loop and plate are smooth in places due to wear. At the centre of the plate the surface is uneven and poorly finished. Around one of the rivet holes, close to the loop, there is some iron staining. The object generally has a smooth dark green patina overall although some patina was removed by the finder when it was cleaned. When received, the buckle was coated in olive oil. 88.6 x 36.3 x 5.3mm. Weight: 46.14g.

Thanks are extended to Barry Ager, Rob Collins, Anna Booth, Kevin Leahy and Sonja Marzinzik for their very useful comments.
