Ear piercing ceremony is a customary tradition in India, practised not only for girls but also for boys.

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Ear piercing is usually done when the kids attain a year, or at 3 years or 5 years of age. Earrings are worn by Indian women, as jewellery or as a symbol of prestige. But many of us are not aware that this custom done as early as possible, when the kids are young, would contribute a lot to the therapeutic value. This custom will improve the intellectual skills of the kids, as it activates the meridians connecting the ear to the brain. Hence certain families perform this ceremony even for boys. Boys as they grow up, leave the practise of wearing earrings, whereas girls continue to adorn their ears with earrings. In south India, this very prevalent, and it is usually carried out, at an auspicious time in temples. When the piercing is done, the child is made to sit on the lap of the maternal uncle or maternal grandfather.Families and friends are usually invited for this ceremony.
