Title |
E miliaris and E sphaera: sea urchin |
|||||||||||||||||||||||
Description |
This chalk drawing shows the ‘sucker’ apparatus or ‘tube feet’ of two species of sea urchin which in PH Gosse’s time were known as Echinus miliaris and Echinus sphaera (now Psammechinus miliaris and Echinus esculentus respectively). The diagram shows the ‘sucker plates’ and whole tube foot. Gosse describes their structure and function on page 288 of his book ‘Evenings at the Microscope’ and includes line drawings very similar to these. |
