H: 25,8 cm. W: 10 cm. Material: wood. Origin: Ivory Coast (Asjanti) Description: The akwaba was first made in the 19th century by a local medicinman. The story behind the object focusses on the importance of having children. The woman, for whom this object was first made couldn't get any children, so she sought help. After consulting a doctor she turned, on advice of her doctor, to the local medicinman. He made her this small puppet and 9 months later her first child was born. It was the beginning of a furtilitycult around the Akwaba. As woman started to believe, or hope, that having such a statue would help them to get pregnant. Location: The object is part of the Etnographic Collections of Ghent University (EVUG). |
