ESS-F31985 Medieval bulla
Description
English: Medieval papal bulla of Pope Gregory IX dating 1227-1241. Cast in lead, the obverse is extremely worn, with the legend: -RE / G-IVS / PP -IIII (probably GRE/GORIVS/PP:VIIII).

The reverse depicts St Paul and St Peter, with the abbreviated names SPA SPE above. It has been pierced with a circular hole just above the first letter. The bulla is 40.83mm in diameter, 3.39mm thick and weighs 37.09 grams. There is a fracture running through the middle of the bulla, and parts of the surface are flaking off.
