Title
ESS-960CE5 Roman Figurine of Minerva
Description
English: Roman cast copper alloy figurine of Minerva. Minerva is wearing a crested helmet, the crest being damaged and incomplete. The breaks on the crest are worn. The surviving section of the crest is ‘s’ shaped in profile, with an openwork sub-oval between the neck and crest. The helmet is semi-circular in profile and oval in cross section. Wavy hair protrudes below the helmet. The facial features are worn and there is some damage on the left of the face. The chest is covered in robes which are depicted using a pronounced moulded ‘V’ shape with incised transverse lines. The reverse of the body is flat and undecorated. The bust is emerging out of a flower comprised of five moulded petals; the central and outer petals are larger. Each petal curves forward at the tip and has moulded decoration along its length. The base of the flower is globular and is socketed for attachment. The figurine is 55.44mm long, 31.93mm wide across the flower, 19.93mm wide across the head (hair), 25.21mm thick across the head, 10.06mm thick across the body, and the globular base has a diameter of 12.76mm with the socket measuring 6.57mm in diameter. The figurine weighs 57.20 grams. It has a dark green-black patina and the surface is slightly pitted. The figurine is similar to SF-FCE4E4, also from Suffolk.
