Title |
ESS-88E111 Medieval zoomorphic ring brooch |
||
Description |
English: Medieval (13th -14th century) cast copper alloy zoomorphic ring brooch. The main body of the brooch is formed of an oval frame measuring 21.16mm by 18.84mm. The frame has a sub-rectangular cross section, 1.82mm wide, 3.46mm thick. The reverse of the frame has a large square notch on both of its shorter edges where the holding mechanism for the (now missing) pin would have been attached. The upper surface of the frame has a raised zig-zag design. The longer edges of the frame each have a projecting arm which is integrally cast with the frame. The arms run vertically for 10mm before being bent back on themselves, forming a ‘U’ shape in profile. The arms have a sub-circular cross section, measuring 3.28mm by 3.10mm. There is a moulded zoomorphic terminal at the end of each arm, measuring 9.23mm long, 5.88mm wide and 3.51mm thick. The terminals are in the form of animal heads and the base of the heads are flat, the upper surface domed. The heads have a pronounced snout with a ridge behind for the eyes and triangular projections for ears at the back of the head, possibly representing a dog. The animal head terminals face towards the centre of the brooch. The brooch has a dark brown-black patina and has a small amount of gilt surviving on the upper surface of the frame. The projecting arms have a large amount of gilt surviving under the zoomorphic terminals. The brooch has a maximum length of 21.16mm, maximum width of 38.51mm (across the projecting arms), a maximum thickness of 7.90mm and it weighs 5.64 grams. This brooch is of similar form to WMID-CA8CF6, GLO-41E3A0, and ESS-AABFE6 |
