Title
ESS-6AA963 Early Medieval coin: penny of Edward the Martyr
Description
English: Eary Medieval silver coin: penny of Edward the Martyr, minted by Leofric at Ipswich. North 763 / Spink 1142.

This coin has also been recorded as EMC 2011.0092.

Dr Martin Allen has commented that "the coin is from the same dies as J.C. Sadler, The Ipswich Mint c.973-c.1210 A.D. Volume I. Eadgar to Aethelred II c.973-c.1016 A.D. (2010), p. 30, Fig. 13, and from the same obverse die as a coin of Wilebeart (Sadler, p. 31, Fig. 14). Sadler records only four coins of Ipswich in the reign of Edward the Martyr (two of Leofric and two of Wilebeart), but a coin of a third moneyer, Waetferth, has been recorded by EMC recently (EMC 2010.0166)."
