Title
ESS-416838 medieval Papal Bulla of Gregory X
Description
English: Medieval cast lead papal bulla of Gregory X, dating 1271-6. The bulla is damaged, with a bend down the centre and a gouge out of the reverse.

The obverse depicts Saints Paul and Peter, with the inscription SPA [SPE] above - SPA for Saint Paul and SPE for Saint Peter. The image of Saint Paul is to the left, and he is depicted with curved lines for his hair and vertical lines for his beard. St Peter, to the right, has small pellets for both his hair and beard. The entire obverse design is contained within a pelleted border.

The reverse of the bulla has the inscription GRE/GORIVS/PP X', arranged in three lines. There is damage between the lower two lines and also on the X. This inscription means Gregory, shepherd of the shepherds (from PP meaning pastor pastorum), tenth of that name.

The bulla is almost circular, with small indents at the top and base. It measures 37.02mm by 33.27mm, is 4.19mm thick and weighs 38.4 grams.
