Title
ESS-22F060 Modern commemorative medal of the battle of Trafalgar
Description
English: Modern cast copper alloy commemorative medal of the battle of Trafalgar. The medal is in poor condition, with most of the original surface missing. The obverse has the remains of a left facing bust. The reverse design is almost completely missing, except for a line of approximately eight ships, with Oct [21 1805] in the exergue. The legend is missing from both surfaces, but probably originally read: HORATIO VISCOUNT NELSON . K . B . DUKE OF BRONTE . &c on the obverse, and ENGLAND EXPEXCTS EVERY MAN WILL DO HIS DUTY on the reverse. However, there are known examples of this medal cast without the legend. The medal is 45.77mm in diameter, 4.53mm thick and weighs 28.60 grams. The medal was intended for presentation to seamen and mariners who took part in the battle. It is thought that c14,000 were distributed. Some medals were made in metals other than copper alloy, but were not intended for survivors. See Brown (1980) British historical Medals 1760-1960 volume one, number 584 for more information.
