Title
ESS-0632D0 Roman cockerel figurine (associated with Mercury)
Description
English: Roman cast copper alloy figurine of a cockerel, associated with the god Mercury. The main body of the cockerel is semi-circular in plan with a sub-circular cross section. The wings are in the form of pronounced ‘tear-drop’ shaped mouldings, running along the length of the body. The wings are worn however some oblique lines representing feathers are visible. The neck extends vertically from the body, and has an oval cross section. The head is sub-triangular with a worn and incomplete cone at its apex. Due to the level of wear, no facial features are apparent. The tail end flattens, and is sub-rectangular in plan, both faces being decorated with oblique grooves to represent the tail feathers. The figurine has two legs, the left positioned slightly further forward than the right, both of which have worn breaks at their base. The legs are circular in cross section. The figurine has a mid-green patina. It is 27.01m long, 28.14mm tall, 11.88mm thick across the body, 4.14mm thick across the neck and head and 1.63mm thick across the tail. It weighs 14.87 grams.
