Die im Mittelalter entstandenen Ratssteinbrüche dienten zur Gewinnung von Baumaterial - sowohl die Stadtmauer, als auch zahlreiche Keller in der Altstadt wurden mit Steinquadern aus dem Wartburgkonklomerat erbaut. Der Name Ratssteinbrüche verweist auf den einstigen Eigentümer - hier die Eisenacher Stadtherren (Ratsherren). Weitere Ratssteinbrüche befanden sich im Mariental unter der Eisenacher Burg, auf dem Petersberg und Pflugensberg (Kalkstein) und im Mosewald (Sandstein), seit der Neuzeit auch in größerer Entfernung zur Stadt - die Stopfelskuppe am Hütschhof wurde für Straßenpflastersteine erworben (Basalt) im 19. Jahrhundert wurden Steinbrüche bei Immelborn und Krauthausen aufgekauft.
