Deutsch: Das mittlere Haus des Gebäudekomplexes war schon im Mittelalter vorhanden. In der Eisenacher Stadtchronik wird es erstmals 1295 als Sondersiechenheim am Steinweg erwähnt. Bauarchäologische Untersuchungen fanden im Kellerbereich statt. Wegen seiner Bedeutung in der Eisenacher Stadtgeschichte steht das Clemensstift (auch Clemensspital) unter Denkmalschutz. |

Als sich im 13. Jahrhundert auch in Thüringen Seuchen entlang der Handelsstraßen ausbreiteten, verfügte die Landesherrschaft den Bau von Sondersiechenheimen und Hospitälern. Abseits der Stadt, aber nahe an den Handelsstraßen, wurden hier kränklich aussehende oder irgendwie verdächtig erscheinende Personen eingewiesen - eine Art Quarantänestation.
